Apprenticeships and vocational training

Apprenticeship based on the principle "learning in practice for practice" has a long tradition in Austria.

The Vocational Training Act (Berufsausbildungsgesetz – BAG, only available in German) includes the related statutory rules.

Apprentices learn professional skills in entrepreneurial reality in companies. They get theoretical and general education in part-time vocational schools. To run this successful "dual system" all responsible bodies on federal, regional and local levels and companies work closely together.

At the end of 2021

  • 107.593 apprentices trained in 212 different apprenticeship occupations:
    • 100.713 in 28.461 training-companies and
    • 6.880 in 93 inter-company training institutions (überbetriebliche Ausbildungseinrichtungen)
